Microsoft Apostate

Blue Screen of Death

It’s getting harder and harder for me to hate Apple.

There was a time when I was the strongest Microsoft/PC advocate alive. Microsoft and the IBM/PC format could do no wrong. I was hooked to Batch file programming and then to QuickBasic. At the height of my MS fandom, I got up to Visual Basic 6 and C+ programming. Then all of a sudden I lost interest in most things technological. It worsened during my study abroad trip to South America, where I did not have my own personal computer.

When I came back to the US, I found that my computer (which had been left for the usage of some friends) had a plethora of viruses on it. After a long battle, I had no alternative but to reinstall Windows XP. Then everything was fine until a friend of mine let me use his MacBook. At first use, Apple’s OSX seemed so strange… but after about 6-7 times using it, I began to see the useful of the system. Then my girlfriend bought me an iPod nano. Yea, nothing significant considering I was late to the iPod party, but I was impressed at how simple and useful this MP3 player was. When my girlfriend bought a MacBook, I turned the corner. The damn system was just so easy to use! Little-to-no issue with viruses. Barely any random OS errors. Simple and visually appealing interface. And it was so easy to install and remove programs…

I became a Microsoft Apostate.

It didn’t help that while I enjoyed playing the XBox, the XBox 360 was not attractive enough for me to drop $400. It didn’t help that all of a sudden there was an abundance of open source/freeware software all over the internet. It didn’t help that Windows Vista felt like a piece of crap. Everything from Ubuntu to Google’s free mantra to Windows’ penchant for failure told me that Microsoft just wasn’t fun anymore.

Of course I’m still using Windows XP and I probably won’t change anytime soon. But Microsoft has undoubtedly lost this fanboy.
