People told me that law school was a grind – like a I have no life grind. And I think they were right.
Law school is a grind. First-year law school definitely robs you of all those hours, minutes, and seconds of idle time that undergrad gave away so easily. Of course, you end up finding a way to adapt and you do take out moments for yourself. You have to give yourself free time a few times a week. If you don’t, you find yourself consumed by legal doctrine… and still more on the horizon. It seems like the learning never stops. But I can’t say it has been the worst. I enjoy it, and I enjoy the company of my section-mates.
I had to give myself some sort of motivation though. So rather than buying a really pretty picture with a motivational catchphrase/cliche on it (or a demotivational poster lol), I decided to just print something out with Microsoft Word.
Blame no one.
Expect nothing.
Do something.
I heard that from the former head coach of the Michigan football team, Lloyd Carr.
And then I printed out,
I have only just a minute, only 60 seconds in it
Forced upon me, can’t refuse it
Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it
But it’s up to me to use it
I must suffer if I lose it
Give account if I abuse it
Just a tiny fleeting minute
But eternity is in it.
I have no idea who first said that. But I heard it time and time again at my undergrad. Although I used to hate it then, I really like it now.
I don’t know if it works, but sometimes it’s good to look up from your work and read something that says, “You can do it, so do it.”

I thought I would inform you who wrote “Just A Minute”.
It was Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, who Martin Luther King Jr.
considered to be his spiritual and intellectual father.
Information about the late Dr. Mays may be found at
