The Ol’ School Prodigy Drops By

Honestly, I had given up on Mobb Deep. It sort of started when both Jay-Z and Nas sent shots at Mobb Deep and Prodigy in particular. The lack of response on his part made me wonder, but their recent release of Americaz Nightmare and their solid discography up until that point kept me listening to them. They simply seemed like a 2-man L.O.X. to me. But when they signed up with G-Unit, dropped one of their weakest albums (Blood Money, in my opinion), and both got tattooed with 50 Cent’s name, they suddenly seemed like some funny dudes. I was not particularly impressed with Prodigy’s solo-release of Return of the Mac, nor did take much notice of Havoc’s drunken insults of Kanye West. Although I don’t expect rappers to be the most authentically righteous, but Prodigy’s verse on “Pearly Gates” and his line that “50 Cent saved me, not Jesus Christ” put me totally off their music. All in all, they stopped registering with me in terms of credibility/integrity, intelligence, and lyricism.

But when I checked HipHopDX the other day, I clicked on a new track by Prodigy called “My World is Empty Without You.” I was really surprised by his lyrics. Honestly, it sounded like the old school Prodigy of the late 90s. The hood lyricist who unapologetically gives you his perspective on life, but with style and intelligence, ya know? Anyways, I was impressed. I don’t know if their next album will be a reflection of this flash of brilliance, or if they’ll try to do what “sells.” Either way, I enjoyed the track a lot.
