“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot…”
Once-ler, from Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax
Interesting how Dr. Seuss was able to encapsulate our notion of excessive deforestation, consumption, and waste in the name of industry and progress. I’m glad that people are starting to be a lot more conscious of their actions and effects on our environment.
Sometimes, I see that the engines of industry churn in an almost unstoppable manner. And I think Dr. Seuss saw that, but he saw something that was hard to see when the book was published in 1971. It was not that industry was evil in and of itself – it’s that industry in its (then perhaps) present form was excessively damaging. I think Dr. Seuss was just making the point that we’re destroying our environment and we’ve got to do something about it. Notice how the Lorax said that he didn’t know what should be done, only that Once-ler should consider doing something…
I hope that we keep on considering.
